Counseling Questions
Do you accept insurance?
We do not accept insurance but our counseling is affordable. Most clients find that they can complete counseling with us for less than their deductible amount, and thus would not be reimbursed even if we accepted insurance.
How long does marriage counseling usually take?
The length of treatment is determined on a case by case basis. The average distressed couple may be in therapy for 8-13 sessions, which is considered short-term therapy in this field. Less distressed couples seeking therapy to regain intimacy and connection may require fewer sessions, while more highly distressed couples, perhaps dealing with infidelity issues, substance abuse, or trauma histories may require more sessions.
How often will we meet?
We structure therapy sessions either once a week or once every two weeks. Often when a couple is in significant distress we will meet once a week for approximately 5 sessions to hopefully get some relief and common ground built between you, then move to once every two weeks to continue building on that base.
How long is a typical marriage counseling session?
At The Couple Zone we structure our sessions to last approximately 50-55 minutes. Initial, intake sessions are either 70 or 90 mins, depending on the therapist. See “Our Counselors” for specifics on each therapist.
What if my partner doesn’t want to come to marriage counseling?
Couples counseling needs to happen with the couple present, and not just one partner If your partner doesn’t want to come to therapy or has concerns, we ask you both to come in and discuss those concerns with us. Many people have concerns and fears about counseling. We are not here to take sides or determine who is right and who is wrong. We are on the side of your marriage or relationship.
Often, men are afraid that they will be blamed if they come to counseling. This is not the case at The Couple Zone. We take a relational perspective – which in everyday language is akin to “there are two sides to every story”. We assume that if we were in your shoes we would most likely be responding in very similar ways. This is important: We do not blame either partner. If either of you are unsure, we ask that each of you commit to only one session initially. This allows you to get to know your counselor a little, let her/him get to know you, see if it feels right for each of you, and your counselor can see if he/she seems to be able to help you reach your goals.
What if one or both of us can’t make it to a scheduled marriage counseling session?
We understand that life happens! If there are scheduling conflicts to work around, we will try to accommodate your needs. We do need at least a 24 hour advanced notice of any cancelled sessions however.
